Early evidence of Crochet includes:
- Japanese Amigurumi dolls (a technique still in use today, shown above)
- Irish lace collars
- Anatolian lace, called oya, found in the Arabian region

- Latin American crocheted pieces used in puberty rites of certain cultures
- Works of nuns in Europe as early as the 18th century and beyond.
- It is believed that crochet in Europe was influenced by early Chinese crochet.
- Early European crochet took the name tambour, stemming from the practice of pulling thread taut over a round wooden hoop
- Eventually, Europeans ditched the hoop and the French gave this new pracice the name croche, meaning hook.
